Security improves in Mugwo Payam as civil-military dialogue continues

By James Innocent

Authorities in Mugwo Payam of Yei River County said that the security situation in the area has improved as civil-military relations strengthened.

The officials made the remark during a one-day security meeting held at the Mugwo Payam headquarters over the weekend.

Addressing the gathering, Latio Nowel Mugwo, Payam Director, revealed the improvement of the security in the area.

He added that besides the improvement in the security, the residents continue to face the impact of the economic crisis.

“The security in the Payam is normal despite other challenges of the security and economic situation, which is affecting the local communities in the Payam,” expressed.

He further applauded the county commissioner and security organs for conducting a one-day meeting to address some of the key challenges affecting the citizens.

The payam leader reiterated commitment to ensure the relation between the resident and the army is strengthened toward improving security in the area.

Janet Michael, a woman representee in Mugwo, called on the government and partners to support the women with other services like our provision of skills and startup capital.

She further encouraged women to engage in doing their business in the market as a simple way of earning a living.

Speaking during the meeting, Commissioner Taban emphasized that the gathering was part of the county’s routine security coordination, which this time was decentralized to Mugwo Payam to engage directly with the local community and address specific concerns on the ground.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the relationship between security forces and civilians,” Commissioner Taban stated. “We want to ensure that challenges affecting this Payam are heard and tackled jointly.”

He reported that the security situation in Mugwo is relatively stable and that local markets are operating normally—an indication of calm and resilience in the area.

The Commissioner also encouraged Mugwo Payam Director Latio Nowel to work collaboratively with the residents and community leaders to sustain peace and foster mutual understanding.

The meeting brought together key figures, including the County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme, the Executive Director of Yei River County, senior commanders from the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), police leadership, top security personnel, the Payam Director of Mugwo, local chiefs, women representatives, and other essential stakeholders.

The dialogue in Mugwo is part of broader efforts by county leadership to promote security, good governance, and cooperation between authorities and communities across Yei River County.
