South Sudan and Sudan have agreed to set models of peace through the development of unitized oil fields, including the Abyei area.
This was revealed in a joint communiqué issued by the foreign affairs ministries. President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the head of the Sudan Sovereign Council Gen. Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan met on Friday to discuss the progress in the implementation of the peace agreement.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan arrived South Sudan’s Capital Juba, on Thursday evening.
Sudan and Uganda are the two guarantors of South Sudan’s peace deal.
In a statement released to the media on Friday after the meeting, Burhan and Kiir agreed to set a model of peace through the development of unitized oil fields, including the Abyei area.
It said that peace and stability as a prerequisite to socio-economic advancements, the heads of states agreed to establishing and extending stability, nationally and regionally across the Horn of Africa.
“The two Presidents agreed to focus on cooperation along the borders of the two independent countries of Sudan and South Sudan as the starting point for the cooperation,” the statement stated.
The two leaders charged their respective foreign ministries to operationalize committees for cross border development that will elaborate the details of this cooperation to rebuild the historic bridges between the two countries.
“The Presidents take this opportunity to encourage the citizens of South Sudan and Sudan to make our diversities become a source of enrichment and strength for both countries. South Sudan and Sudan will revive the ancient economic, political and cultural cooperation that made our Nile valley civilizations prosperous as far back as the Cushite’s Kingdom, which unites our people in a common origin,” the statement stressed.
