An activist has warned that the current political development in Sudan is disturbing South Sudan’s peace deal.

Sudan is the current chair of IGAD and is one of the guarantors of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The Sudan’s military seized power on Monday, dissolving the transitional government hours after troops arrested Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other officials, news agencies reported.

The takeover comes more than two years after protesters forced the ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir and just weeks before the military was expected to hand the leadership of the council that runs the African country over to civilians.

After the early morning arrests of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other officials, thousands poured into the streets of the capital, Khartoum, and its twin city of Omdurman, according to agencies.

Activist Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Organization for Progress Organization (CEPO) is urging the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to urgently intervene and rescue its chairman.

“Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is urging IGAD current head of states to rescue the arrested active chair of IGAD by the military in Sudan. The act of arresting active chair of IGAD is a total undermining of IGAD and it is condemnable act,” partly read a statement extended to No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper.

“Any undemocratic act currently in Sudan has serious implications in the region” it added.

“South Sudan and Sudan have mutual political relation in the process of political transitioning from the violence to peace. Issue of the agreement on the four freedoms between South Sudan and Sudan will be affected by this latest development in Sudan. It is high time for African Union to take serious measures for the protection of sitting chair of IGAD and sitting head of government of its member state being arrested and detained” Yakani stressed.

Yakani said it is the mandate of the African Union to protect the sitting chair of IGAD who is currently under house arrest.
