Senior SPLM-IO official murdered in Leer violence

A senior South Sudan main armed opposition official was killed on Friday in of Unity State’s Leer County violence that initially started following attacks on the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) based in Koch County.

James Gatjung Jail Dok, the deputy chairman of the SPLM-IO led by the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny in Unity state was killed when armed youth along with commissioner of Koch County in Unity State attacked Leer County killing hundreds of civilians and rapping women.

In a statement extended to the media on Tuesday, Unity state’s deputy governor Tor Tungwar Kweiguong, who also doubles as the chairman of the SPLM-IO in Unity state, said the top opposition official in the state was killed on Friday with other civilians in Leer.

“On behalf of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM/SPLA (IO) and on my own behalf and family, I would wish to convey my deepest condolence to the entire membership of SPLM/SPLA (IO) in Unity State, family, relatives, friends and People of South Sudan for the loss of civilians in Southern Unity,” he said.

Tungwar revealed that Comrade James Gatjung Jail Dok, who was the Deputy Chairperson of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM/SPLA (IO) in Unity State, was one of the many unarmed civilians that were killed on Friday 8th April 2022 in the swampy areas of Leer County,” he added.
