MANNERS MAKE A MAN
What differentiates man from beast besides the fact that we can tame anything are manners. People always applaud one who has good manners or good behavior. It could even be called good morals! According to the English dictionary; morals is an adjective that is concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior.
The issue of irresponsible management of litter/waste/rubbish/garbage (wasaka) by people in the community is still alarming. It not only happening in the towns but also crosses over into the homes. Otherwise how would the town be so garbage infested if the people individually kept their homes neat?
Back to the theme; manners make man is a proverb used to teach society on how to quickly distinguish between a responsible and irresponsible person. The former will keep good behavior like being accountable for their actions including greeting others, treating all equally, keeping humble, respecting all of which taking care of rubbish is part while the latter will be the opposite of all that.
The effort being put by different bodies to keep the town clean is highly appreciated and the citizens are looking forward to seeing more ideas being manifested for the steady yet good development of this nation. The Bible says, an idea well expressed is like a design of gold, set in silver. (Proverbs 25: 11).
However the task still remains for every individual to challenge themselves not to completely rely on machines and trucks but rather to practice basic garbage/waste management on the individual or home level first before the town is reached.
Charity begins at home, a good word taught to pupils in primary school. Unfortunately, if the teach this but not practice it, then it means that they don’t know what they are teaching. Keeping the town clean is good but it is only ironical if the sitting room in the house sparkling clean and yet the other rooms in the house are stinking of garbage!
