Aweil rape case, one convict innocent

The High Court in Aweil, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has revealed that one of three suspects accused of raping a 6-year-old girl to death, has been set free.

On the 4th May 2022, police in Aweil detained three Sudanese businessmen accused of raping and killing of 6-year-old girl child.

On Monday 23rd May 2022, the three suspects appeared in court before the judge to answer the charges labelled against them.

Mr. Mohammed Hassan Adam has been set free today after investigation and the high court proceeding.

According to Presiding Judge, Abraham Majur Laat, the suspect Mr. Omer was found to have broken article 140 of South Sudan Penal Code of 2008, which shows that he was part of the problem that resulted to the death of Angel Abuk Lual Lual in Aweil town on the 3rd May 2022.

Judge Majur announced the fourth court hearing to be at 2PM on the 26th May, today.

Since Monday this week, hundreds of citizens in Aweil poured to the court premises to attend the session.

People who attended the court proceeding carry placards which read; “No to child abuse”, “children are not subject to be killed”, “Justice for Abuk must be served immediately”.

There are twelve competent lawyers presenting late Abuk Lual meanwhile, the accused are being presented by one Lawyer Isaac Deng Athian.
