Mundri: Over thousand suffer from nodding disease

Health officials in Mundri County of Western Equatoria State are saying one thousand people are living with nodding diseases. The official said that they have registered 1,462 people living with Nodding disease in Mundri and 308 are under the age of 18 years.

This was revealed to media yesterday during an official launch of Nodding Syndrome Clinic in Mundri west.

The chairperson of Nodding in Mundri west, Wilson Bayiri commended CUAMM, Amref, SEM and government for helping the community.

He said that, they would not have anyone to support them because they have the disease, “some people looked at us as we cannot do anything but we are productive, have right to Education and enjoy equal rights with others without discrimination”.

Besides, the County Health Director, Victoria Alawia encouraged people living with nodding disease to come for medical treatment without fear. She also advised them to follow up medical procedure and stop taking liquor while taking medicine.

Finally, the Director of Mental health from National Ministry of Health, Dr. Atong Ayuel Akol said nodding disease is common and said the National Ministry of Health is ready to render its support to the people living with the diseases.

She said that Mundri west county health department is very lucky to have strong and courageous director who she described as hard-working woman who always works day and night for the sake of her community.

“Woman can do what Man can do,” Atong Said.

Nodding Syndrome Program started in Mundri west in April, 2022 with implementing partners such as CUAMM, Amref and SEM supported people living with nodding disease by providing drugs.
