“SPLM can destroy, re-amend”- says Deng Alor

By Tereza Jeremiah Chuei

The representative of the former detainees (FDs) Deng Alor Kuol has urged the government of National Unity to unity of purpose to enable people to enjoy peace in the country.

According to Alor, the extension of transitional period was the last chance for political leaders to implement peace, asserting that the mother SPLM party can destroy and re-amend if they are united.

“I am appealing to President Salva Kiir, Dr. Wani Igga, Dr. Riek Machar, Rebecca Nyandeng and all the rest of the leaders, I want unity, I want us to unite, as a party at least unity of purpose, its only if SPLM unite then we can implement this agreement,” Alor plead.

“Because we are united that is why we are here today, we need the same Unity, we have signed this unity but we need to unite at least unity of purpose, its true we are from different political parties, but if you see people who are sitting here including the President, we are all SPLM, so SPLM can become a problem and SPLM can become a solution,” he hinted.

The FD senior member continued to remind his fellow leaders to remember the tangible outcome the SPLM got when they united back then, saying it’s that unity that brought them to the present day.

“For the last few years, we have signed number of agreements, the only successful agreement, was the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that brought the independence, and why it was successful was because we united, we were one people, and I remember in 2002, SPLM was divided, Dr. Riek Machar and Dr. John then brought SPLM back together, so let’s reunite ourselves,” Alor stressed.

“We have signed the agreement, the roadmap, but it comes with heavy statement, this must be the last chance for us as leaders of South Sudan, if we want to help our people,” he urged.

On the other hand the Chairperson of SPLM-IO Dr. Riek agreed to Alor’s call for unity of purpose of the SPLM. He however cautioned that it may become monolithic political party.

“Deng Alor was talking about unity, I agree with him, unity of purpose is important, so that others are not deterred by the unity of SPLM because that would mean a one monolithic political party,” Dr. Riek said.
