Tribute pours for fallen Anyanya hero ‘Agangriel’

President Salva Kiir on Sunday paid homage to fallen Anyanya one hero retired General Martin Mawein Dut Anyuon aka ‘Agangriel’ who passed away last week at Promise Hospital.

In his condolence message Kiir described late Aganriel as a freedom fighter who will be remembered for his contributions toward the liberation of the country.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Sunday joined mourners at Juba International Airport to see off the casket of the late Retired Gen. Martin Mawien Dut Anyuon,” read statement on Presidential page.

Minister of Transport, Madut Biar Yel described late Mawien as one of the Anyanya one heroes who dedicated his life to serve South Sudan since the liberation struggle.

On December 4, the family confirmed his death at Promise Hospital; however, the cause of death was not made public yet.

Aganriel, who hail from Northern Bahr el Ghazal of Aweil West County, died at the age of 90.

He participated in the Anyanya One guerilla movement in 1955 till 1972 peace was signed, as a training commander of Bonga Training Center and graduated many army divisions.

He was also among the first to joined SPLM/A movement in 1983 alongside founding leaders, and he was among the senior officers before he retired.

Gen. Mawien will be laid to rest in his home town of Alang, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.
