Kiir pardons 71 inmates, 36 on death row

By Bida Elly David

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has pardoned a total 71 inmates with 36 on death row while 35 were convicted of minor crimes.

Kiir pardon was pronounced in a Presidential decree read over the State-run South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), Friday evening. This came as a gesture of peace in response to Pope Francis peace pilgrimage to Juba.

“I Salva Kiir Mayardit, the president of the Republic of South Sudan do here by grant pardon to inmates in Juba Central prison as here under” he said

The decree however did not point out the crimes and the offences committed by the inmates meant to face the death row.

President Kiir has directed all the state authorities to immediately execute the orders without delay to enable the decree work on its effect.
