Authorities in Lakes State, suspect armed youth from Luacjang community of Tonj East County to be responsible for death of six elderly fishermen, killed in Rumbek North County.

Lakes State’s acting minister of information and communication, William Koji Kirjok said armed youth from Luacjang, Tonj East County of Warrap State, are suspected to have orchestrated the killing.

He said that the elders, who were killed on Tuesday afternoon, had gone fishing at Alor landing site in Madol Payam, Rumbek North County.

“While they were in the fishing site, the suspected youth came from the other side and killed those six elders instantly,” he said.

He said the elders were innocent and had nothing to do with firearms.

According to Koji, clashes between Pakam and Luacjang in February might be a cause of the deadly killing of the six elderly fishermen.

The minister urged the government of the neighboring Warrap State to continue engaging their youth to avoid carrying out further violence to other states.

“If the youth of Luacjang come to Lakes State for water and grazing they have to come and stay peacefully and if they want to go, they have to go back peacefully without causing chaos,” he stressed.

Hon. Isaac Mayen Mathiec member of Lakes state transitional legislative assembly called for deployment of forces to the area to deter further attacks.

“We the MPs of Lakes state assembly from Rumbek North County, are requesting troops to be deployed in Alor to stop this inter-communal fighting and revenge killings” he stressed.

The MP said deployment of the forces will prevent raiding and killing among communities of Pakam and Luacjang area.

He appealed to his people to remain calm in order to allow the government dispatch troops.

“There is no need for revenge as long as we are under dialogue. Leave it to us as the government. We know what to do with those who took law into their own hands”, he noted.
