Gov’t warns against sale of donated toilet slabs

By Hou Akot Hou

Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Ministry of water resources has issued a stern warning to locals in Aweil against selling the distributed latrine covers (Slabs).

Mr. Dut Deng Gabriel, Director for water and sanitation at the ministry noted that some individuals who were given the latrine slabs by health partners instead opted to sell them out.

He said they are currently at logger heads with those who took the decision of selling the slabs away for survival.

“They sell the slaps at 2,000 SSP, yet these items were donated by partners, we begged to support us, since many people do not use latrines because they defecate at random” he said.

Deng stated that they have notified the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel to take stringent measures against the perpetrators.

“If the CIDs get you selling, know that you will pay the price” he warned.

He noted that the items were meant to prevent diseases as defecating anyhow contributes to spread of infections such as diarrhea and cholera.

“When flies sit on fasces and go again to contaminate foods, it results in diseases,” he noted.

According to Deng, early this year more than 200 latrine covers were donated by health development partners to support people to dig and construct their own pit latrines.

He further urged people who have not come to the Ministry to turn up for registration adding they are embarking on covering all areas in Aweil through digging pit latrines.
