Police issues ultimatum for motorists to acquire number plates

By Hou Akot Hou

Traffic police in Aweil, Northern Bahr El Ghazal state, have given an ultimatum for owners of both heavy and light vehicles to register their machines and get plate numbers.

“State traffic police directorate is urging owners of tractors, cars and the motorbikes to get themselves number plates,” a statement issued by the police reads in part.

The move follows reports of most rampant accidents linked vehicles without registered number plates, making it difficult to identify them on attempt to escape.

Acting traffic police director, Arkangelo Angou Makor pronounced the directives on Thursday.

He said they are giving out number plates to control accidents, as some motorists hit people and run, as they can’t be traced.

“These are directives extended from the national directorate of traffic, as the state works within the sphere of the same law,” he added.

According to the traffic officer, a number plate for a heavy vehicle costs SSP 85,000 and that of the motorbike is SSP 50,000, only.

Makor warned motorists until June 10 to make sure they acquire number plates.

He said that anyone who does not abide by the decision will face adverse consequences.

“If your vehicle is caught that time without number plate, then know that you have to bear the brunt of the action” he said, noting that “Better you hurry up and implement the rule”.

Some residents in Aweil, however, have accused the state traffic police authority of cooperating with people they know and at times provide number plates freely.
