Food poisoning kills 4 people

Four people died of suspected food poisoning on Tuesday, while others hospitalized under serious conditions at in Pieri in Uror County of Jonglei State.

The county health director, Rebecca Nyanuer Kai calls on the Health Ministry and aid agencies to investigate the matter, saying food samples had already been collected.

“A family of 6 suffered from food poisoning after eating “posho” with greens. A grandmother died on spot while three children, 2 boys and a girl, died while at a health facility in Pieri,” she said.

Two others are still at the Pieri PHCC presenting with signs and symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting and profuse sweating, the health official said.

Joseph Bayak, the county executive director, said the four dead people included three children and their grandmother while two other family members are being hospitalized.

“What happened in Pathai Payam was that a family of 6 suffered from food poisoning after having shared a meal,” he told No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper yesterday.

The county commissioner pointed out that an investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the incident.

“We do not know if this poison is in food or water,” he said.

On Wednesday afternoon, health officials and the police went to Pathai to investigate the incident.
