POEM

By Mayom Deng

In the heart of Africa, a tale untold,
A story of courage, dreams unfold,
Amidst the strife and battles fought,
A nation emerged, a nation planned,
South Sudan, free at last.

Born out of wars and struggle,
From the ashes of conflict,
A phoenix arose,
For her peoples’ spirits never did crumble,
A land yearning for peace where love overflows,
Centuries of struggle, a quest for liberation, freedom and a
precious life,
Sons and daughters united as one,
From the greater Upper Nile, Mayom Denger Equatoria to the greater Bahr
El Ghazal,
A land to be one
South Sudan embraced its moment of creation.

Amidst the cheers and joyful cries,
The flag unfurled and flagging high,
A symbol of pride, hope and unity,
In the face of adversity,
In it’s colors, the promise of a brighter dawn,
Black, red, green, blue, white and yellow a nation’s guide,
A tapestry of cultures hand in hand,
From the Dinka, Nuer, Bari, Collo and other tribes united, they stand,
In celebration of freedom, a united band,
South Sudan, radiant and free,
A testament to the power of unity.

With fervent hope and unity’s embrace,
The people stood tall, a sovereign space,
From the chains of oppression, they broke free,
To reclaim their land, their destiny,
With courage, a blaze, they faced the fight,
Our heroes and heroines, made it possible,
Your liberation, a triumph so sweet,
A tale of courage, we shall repeat,
A chorus of voices lifted high,
Their songs of freedom, a heartfelt cry,
Echoed through the valleys and hills high,
Leaders emerged with a vision so clear,
Guiding their people and conquering fear,
They built a nation brick by brick,
With determination, resilience and brilliance,
Justice, liberty and prosperity as their compass,
Never to flick,
With dreams and aspirations swore,
South Sudan, a nation reborn,
Happy Independence Day, South Sudan.
