Eight perish in spate of attacks

Armed bandits have killed eight civilians in two separate attacks in Duk County in Jonglei State, local officials said.

The attacks occurred on Monday.

Peter Latjor Chuol, Duk County Commissioner, said in the first incident which occurred in Panyang, a man was killed, and four children abducted while later the same day seven people were killed on the outskirts of Pagak area.

“What happened on Monday morning was that some civilians were attacked while heading for Poktap from Panyang area, resulting in the death of a man and abduction of four children,” he narrated.

He stated that two women were among the seven people killed in the second attack.

The county commissioner said several people are still missing following the attack.

“More than 10 people are still missing following these attacks. We don’t know their whereabouts,” he noted, adding, “We believe armed bandits from a neighboring community were involved in the attack. So, I appeal to all youth to stop these senseless attacks and accept peace.”

Reports of road ambushes and inter-communal violence are always making headlines in parts of the country, with Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) witnessing rising inter-communal violence in recent weeks.
