Court sets suspected ECSS church arsonist free

Lakes State public prosecution attorney (PPA) has set free a suspect accused of setting ablaze St. Emmanuel parish church in Akuac residential area in Rumbek Central County.

Lakes state police spokesperson, Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac confirms the release of the suspect.

“The perpetrator who was involved in burning Episcopal Church (ECSS) St Emmanuel parish church last month has been released by public prosecutor attorney (PPA) after the police investigation,” he said.

According to police, the release of the suspect followed hospital report showing the man had mental problem.

“The police investigated the case until they (police) apprehend this person. He was later discovered to be having mental problem after he was taken to Rumbek state hospital,” the police spokesperson added.

The police spokesperson said medical checks at the hospital approved the suspect had some effects of drugs which he was using.

The decision to continue with the case or not, was left in the hand of the Church administration.

However, the Episcopal Church of South Sudan (ECSS) administration in Rumbek decided to write a letter of forgiveness and directed the Public Prosecution Attorney to releases the suspect.
