Construction of Akon International Airport kicks off

Over 120 trucks were deployed on Friday to transport Marram from Malekalel, Aweil South County to the construction site of Akon International Airport.

The construction project is being carried out by Wunkoc Engineering and Modern Contractors, a South Sudanese-owned company.

This transportation initiative follows an agreement reached between the community of Aweil South and Wunkoc Engineering Company and Modern Contractors.

During the launching event, Gogrial West County Commissioner, Peter Wek Koor, expressed the community’s willingness to collaborate with the constructors.

He stated that the community is pleased to witness these development programs and assures their full cooperation with the workers.

Additionally, the government is prepared to provide adequate security for the workers, as well as for the construction materials and equipment, he said.

Managing Director of Wunkoc Engineering Company and Modern Contractors, Mr. Malang Riing Riing, expressed optimism that the construction of the airport will meet international standards and emphasized their commitment to completing the project within the agreed-upon timeframe.

Wunkoc Engineering and Modern Contractors have subcontracted to certain companies, including Loyal Construction Company.

The Managing Director of Loyal Construction, Engineer Teodros Yossief, confirmed that they have already cleared and leveled the site.

They are prepared to commence the transportation of Marram, delivering and transporting as agreed upon.

Yossief expressed gratitude to the stakeholders for their full support.

On February 15 of last year, the foundation stone for Akon International Airport was officially laid by Vice President for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, and South Sudan’s First Lady, Mary Ayen Mayardit.
