An Open Letter to National Minister of Finance and Planning

By Khon Ajang Akol

Dear Minister Dr Baranaba Bak Chol

Subject: Addressing the Economic Crisis and Strengthening the South Sudanese Currency.

I hope this letter finds you well as you assume your new role as the Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Sudan.

I write to express my concerns regarding the ongoing economic crisis in our country and to offer some suggestions on how we can tackle this crisis and strengthen the South Sudanese currency.

Firstly, I commend your dedication and commitment to serving the nation during these challenging times.

The economic crisis we face requires immediate attention and a comprehensive strategy to address its root causes.

I believe that by implementing the following measures, we can gradually overcome this crisis and strengthen our currency’s value against the American dollar:

  1. Fiscal Discipline and Budgetary Reforms:

As Minister of Finance, it is vital to prioritize fiscal discipline and ensure that government spending is well-managed and aligned with national priorities. Implementing comprehensive budgetary reforms, including enhanced transparency, efficient revenue collection, and prudent expenditure management, will contribute to stabilizing the economy and strengthening the national currency.

  1. Promote Economic Diversification:

South Sudan’s heavy reliance on oil exports has made our economy vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices.

To mitigate this risk, we must actively promote economic diversification by investing in non-oil sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and renewable energy.

This diversification will not only reduce our dependence on a single industry but also create job opportunities and enhance foreign exchange reserves.

  1. Attract Foreign Direct Investment:

Encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI) is crucial to stimulating economic growth and strengthening our currency.

As Minister of Finance, I urge you to work closely with relevant government agencies to create an enabling environment for FDI, such as streamlining investment procedures, improving infrastructure, and ensuring investor protection.

By attracting responsible and sustainable investments, we can infuse our economy with much-needed capital and expertise.

  1. Strengthen the Financial Sector:

A robust financial sector is essential for economic stability and a strong currency.

I recommend prioritizing measures to strengthen our banking system, such as enhancing regulatory frameworks, ensuring effective supervision, and promoting financial inclusion.

By fostering a sound and transparent financial sector, we can bolster confidence in our currency and attract domestic and international investors.

  1. Enhance Monetary Policy:

Working closely with the Central Bank, I encourage you to implement prudent monetary policies that focus on controlling inflation, managing interest rates, and ensuring exchange rate stability. Effective monetary policy measures will have a direct impact on the strength of our currency and overall economic stability.

  1. Encourage Export Promotion:

Boosting exports is crucial for reducing trade deficits and increasing foreign currency inflows.

I urge you to prioritize initiatives that support local industries, provide export incentives, and enhance trade facilitation.

By promoting Made-in-South-Sudan products and expanding our export markets, we can generate foreign exchange earnings and strengthen our currency.

  1. Collaboration and International Support:

Addressing the economic crisis requires collaboration with international partners, regional institutions, and development organizations.

I urge you to actively engage with these stakeholders to seek financial assistance, technical expertise, and capacity-building support. Collaborative efforts will not only provide immediate relief but also contribute to long-term economic resilience.

I trust that you will approach your responsibilities with dedication, transparency, and a strong commitment to the welfare of our nation.

It is my sincere hope that, under your leadership, South Sudan will overcome the economic crisis and witness the strengthening of our national currency, ensuring a prosperous future for all citizens.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

I look forward to witnessing positive changes in our economy under your guidance.

Yours sincerely,
