Members of Unity State Transitional Legislative Assembly on Monday passed the emolument Act Amendment Bill 2023, to increase their benefits.
“We have passed the Emolument Act Bill that can guide the payments of parliamentary members,” the chairperson of the Specialized Committee for Finance at the state assembly, William Gatluak said.
Once assented to by the state governor, the bill will award each MP SSP 500,000 as monthly emoluments and allowances.
Previously, a member of Unity State Assembly earned SSP 85,000 as their emolument and sitting allowance, but the remuneration is set to increase with the new amendment bill.
“We agreed to pass the Emolument Act Bill 2023 that will increase our salaries to SSP 500,000 from SSP 85,000 as legislative assemblies in Unity State,” the finance committee chairperson stated.
The documents will be sent to the office of Governor Dr. Joseph Manytuil Wejang for signing into law.
If the governor doesn’t assent the amended bill into law within 30 days, MP Gatluak said the bill will automatically become an act according to the law.
“If you have a law that guides you, your activities will definitely be official,” he noted.
