A free fistula surgery treatment camp that commenced in Aweil Civil Hospital, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State on Monday, is bringing a glimmer of hope and relief to patients.
Ayak Dut, a mother who suffered from fistula for years and was one of the first beneficiaries to be operated, now hopes that she will get better.
Mrs. Ayak has been stressed and drained by the condition that has made her grow weaker and weaker for the past five years.
“I have been suffering for five years, and it is something that made me so weary, and indeed, I never thought that I would be okay,” he said.
“I will now see whether I will be better since the operation was done yesterday,” she consoled.
Ayak believes she will fully recover and be like other mothers who do not have fistula ailments.
For his part, Aweil Civil Hospital Medical Director, Dr. Santino Ajou Tong, revealed that six fistula patients will undergo free surgery at Aweil Hospital this week.
“The fistula surgeons arrived on Saturday, and we have started operations,” he said.
However, the medical note noted that not all of the fistula patients will immediately go for the surgery, except those screened already.
“We have done the screening and will see who will go for the surgery, like the other woman, Ayak, who had a successful operation or surgery,” he stated.
Dr. Ajou urges the public to bring the patients to the hospital for registration and get free surgery for their fistulas.
A fistula is an abnormal connection or passageway between organs or vessels that normally do not connect in the human tube.
