Soldier commits suicide

By Hou Akot Hou

South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF) soldier has committed suicide in Udhum Payam, Aweil West County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal state.

Police authorities in Udhum Payam found the deceased, identified as Dut Akuei, hanging in the bush.

The soldier allegedly committed suicide after disagreements with his wife.

Police is holding the wife of the deceased in custody for an investigation to establish the death of her husband.

According to Udhum deputy payam administrator, Mr. James Garang, residents alerted authority about the SSPDF soldier’s death on Wednesday.

He said the deceased soldier, Garang Akuei, had a quarrel with his wife before he thought of setting off for Division 3 at the Wunyiik military barrack, where his colleagues were getting their salaries.

James said the deceased left his house, and people thought he reached the military headquarters but were consequently found dead in the bush hanging from a tree.

Mr. James said that on hearing the incident, he and the police collaborated to apprehend his wife, as it was reported that he was having a problem with her.

The deputy payam administrator appealed to the public to refrain from thinking of suicide as a result of short temper brewing from anger.

He would rather advise people to seek other avenues of settling disputes in their families or with neighbors.

“I would like to tell the public that we need to exercise restraint on our homestead,” he advised.

“If you have a problem with your partner or neighbor, just call another person who is God-fearing or has a sound mind to narrate the nature of the problem and then come to a peaceful solution rather than going violent or taking one’s life,” he continued.

Cases of people committing suicide have been on the rise across the state and are mostly being attributed to the economic crisis.
