Jonglei attack toll rises to 28 death cases

By Charles K Mark

Death toll of an attack in Poktap Payam, Duk County, in Jonglei state has risen to 28 and 18 people sustained injuries.

Duk county commissioner, Peter Latjor Chuol confirmed the new report, saying it rose up from 15 death cases, last week.

“Now the death number has increased to 28, and 18 are wounded,” Latjor confirmed to No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper.

He said that the increment came as a result of youth from only one Payam, trying to pursue the attackers who were over 4,500 – 5,000 but were defeated.

The Commissioner said he visited the attacked Payam (Poktap) and witnessed the alarming situation.

“Over 7, 000 heads of cattle have been taken away,” Latjor worried.

According to the commissioner, the communities do not have food and are starving as they depended on milk and meat from their animals.

He urged the government, relief organizations, and the international community to assess the situation.

The attack was allegedly carried out by armed youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPPA) leaving scores injured and cattle raided.

The government of Jonglei State had urged the National Government to deploy unified forces to the borderlines to prevent more subnational violence between Jonglei and Greater Pibor.
