Three rape suspects await trial

Police in Aweil West County of Northern Bahr El Gazal state have arraigned three  rape suspects currently remanded in Nyamlel town, for trail.

The three suspects, allegedly lured a woman with a drink and raped her in a marriage ceremony at Pantiit village, on outskirts of Nyamlel town.

Mr. Philip Agany Thiep, the police investigator said the incident, occurred on Monday at the marriage ceremony.

He said the rape survivor, is identified only by her first name, Abuk.

She was reportedly lured into forceful sex by one of the suspects, called Akot Deng, who shoved her into a bush away from the scene of the marriage celebration.

Deng purportedly first, gave the victim some local brew to gain his fanciful whim or impulse of raping her.

He said the other two lads later joined him and they raped the victim till they left her flat.

“The three suspects are now with us in Nyamlel custody. This woman is purportedly said to have been dragged into a forest by a man called Deng, who took her away from the marriage ceremony and seduced her after giving her local brew or alcohol, according to the investigation,” said Agany.

The police detective added that a case is being opened by the state attorney general against the suspects who will be arraigned in court.

The incident reportedly angered the families of the rape victim but is being handled by the court.

A local medic at Nyamlel Hospital also confirmed that the survivor was rushed to them for some first-aid treatment to save her from complications.

Lual Khamis Lual, the Deputy Director of the Nyamlel Hospital, said they immediately gave the woman medicines to prevent pregnancy and to save her from getting infections, as the status of the perpetrators wasn’t known.

“We provided her with emergency pills because we don’t know the status of the accused men” he said.

“We immediately gave her drugs to save her from pregnancy, as nobody could ascertain whether ovulation might have occurred during the act and caused pregnancy. And other drugs to prevent infections were also given, as the statuses of the men who committed the sexual assault are not known,” he narrated.

He added that the victim was also being undertaken through two weeks’ counseling with trauma experts.
