Kiir directs Warrap Governor to restore peace

By Bida Elly David

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the governor of Warrap to stabilize security across his state following recent violence and tensions.

According to a statement from office of the president, Kiir issued the directive during a meeting with Kuol Mour Mour at presidential palace, on Thursday.

In August last year, fighting erupted between the communities of Gogrial East County and Jur River County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, over land ownership, which saw a recurrence of the same issue this month.

The inter-communal tensions have ever since intensified with revenge attacks, including targeted ambushes on travelers across the neighbouring communities.

President Kiir has been issuing several decrees to relieve political stakeholders and leaders to bring about change, but his efforts have not yielded any fruit.

Instead of resorting to making changes most often, Kiir opted this time to push the current governor of Warrap State, whose communities have been involved in inter-communal violence, to ensure that calm is sustained within the state and among its neighbours.

The President directed the Governor, not only to stabilize security but also to initiate free dialogue among the conflicting parties for peace to prevail.

According to the statement, governor accepted president’s directives and promised to restore calm.

“Governor Kuol Muor Muor said he was leaving the state to address the current situation, following inter-communal skirmishes in parts of the state,’’ reads part of the statement from the president’s office.
