Police detains three women over market fire

Aweil West County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State is investigating three women suspected of starting fire that caused destruction in Udhum Payam, on Tuesday.

The blaze, which reportedly began in a restaurant, engulfed nearby shops and houses, leaving 130 structures damaged.

Atak Wol Kiir, the director of police in the area confirmed the detention of three women for interrogation to ascertain the cause of the problem of fire.

“We have detained three women who were seen working in the restaurant where the fire started,” said Wol.

“While they deny involvement, witnesses claim they were responsible for igniting the fire.” He added.

The women are currently being held in police custody and will be presented in court as the investigation progresses.

“The destruction is significant, and we take such incidents very seriously,” emphasized Wol.

This incident follows a similar fire in Maper-Akot-Aru that left many residents facing economic hardship after losing their shops and homes.

Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant, particularly regarding the potential fire risks posed by children in populated areas.
