Over 3 million children to get polio vaccine

At least 3.1 million children will be vaccinated nationwide against Polio, a highly infectious and paralyzing disease.

National Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization in South Sudan have said that the campaign launched, Tuesday targets children aged 0-59 months.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, CDC/US, GAVI/Vaccine Alliance, Rotary International, UNICEF, and WHO) and other key national partners, support the programme.

Polio is infectious viral disease that commonly affects children under 5 years of age. It is transmitted from person-to-person mainly through faecal-oral route.

According to the Ministry of Health and its partners, the target of vaccination in South Sudan was to reach 4.5 million children by March 2022, following 1.1 million children who were vaccinated across the country in December 2021.
