Gov’t to evaluate SDGs implementation

By Bida Elly David

Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning is to conduct a voluntary review on implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), on Thursday.

The evaluation aims at finding position of the government towards achieving the sustainable development goals, as planned.

Deputy minister of finance, Agok Makur said the review will focus on the stand of the government towards fighting zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, quality education, climate action, peace, justice, and reconciliation.

“This voluntary national review provides us with a crucial opportunity to assess South Sudan’s progress thus far and to reflect on the efforts we still need to make,” Makur said.

He emphasized that by taking stock of the government’s achievements and challenges, they can strategize for the future and accelerate a positive journey towards sustainable development.

“This significant milestone will mark our country’s commitment to transparent governance and sustainable development on the global stage,” Makur stated.

Furthermore, the deputy finance minister underscored that the review report will also prepare the government for an upcoming political forum in New York, USA, which will require a comprehensive report on the country’s achievements.

“The other purpose of the event is to enable the country to prepare its inaugural report on the SDGs for the upcoming high-level political forum on sustainable development goals in New York this July,” he said.

Nevertheless, Deputy Minister Agok encouraged citizens to join hands with their government as they prepare to launch the review report on the challenges and achievements.

“We encourage all the citizens to stay focused on the on-going awareness in the media so that everyone can be engaged in the voluntary national review process and the implementation of the SDGs,” he added.

Makur emphasized that “collective action from everyone is required for the country to make significant strides towards achieving the sustainable development goals and building a brighter future for all South Sudanese citizens.”
