South Sudan Women Cup: Yei Joint Stars thrashes Al-Wehida FC

Al-Wehida Football Club Women’s team’s unbeaten run in the third edition of the South Sudan Women’s Cup, came to an end on Friday morning after they lost to Yei Joint Stars 5:0 in a classification match.

Classification matches are played to determine the winner from each zone, and they are played once.

This is the first time Al-Wehida FC has lost a match in this competition.

In the early stages of the competition, Al-Wehida FC eliminated the Young Stars of Torit 1-0 on aggregate to pair the Nile Eagles of Bor, whom they also managed to beat 13:0 on aggregate before losing to the two-time defending champion Yei Joint Stars in the classification match.

Whereas Yei Joint Stars defeated both Bentiu City SC and Munuki 7:2 and 2:1 on aggregate, respectively, but in the process, they lost a petition to Bentiu City SC and won another one against Munuki FC.

Three first-half goals from Mary Angier in the 4th minute, Raham Cosmas, and Mondong Jesica in the 25th and 33rd minutes, respectively, helped Yei Joint Stars have an opportunity to progress to the semi-finals.

Before the full-time whistle, Yei Joint Stars added more miseries to Al-Wehida through Raham Cosmos’s second goal, which was a deflected shot into the back of the net in the 75th minute. Additionally, three minutes into stoppage time, Mary Dawa netted the fifth goal for Yei Joint Stars to seal a semi-final fixture against Al-Hilal FC of Wau.

So far, Tiger FC (women) from Aweil and Hilal (women) FC of Wau are the first two teams to book their slots in the semi-final fixtures expected to be played on Sunday, April 28, 2024, in the morning and afternoon.

In the semi-final fixtures, Yei Joints Stars will take on Al-Hilal FC at 8:00 AM CAT, while Al-Wehida FC of Yambio will entertain Tiger FC of Aweil at 3 PM CAT.
