By Kei Emmanuel Duku

An army officer is in police custody on suspicion of shooting of a 12-year-old boy at Midan Jamus playground in Munuki residential area on Wednesday.

South Sudan Police Spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin, detailed the incident, saying a soldier, who was guarding a nearby house, fired live round at the boy, killing him instantly.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, however, Maj. Gen. Justin reported that the soldier accused the boy of taking photograph of the house without authorization.

“An altercation ensued when the soldier questioned the boy about photographing the building,” said Maj. Gen. Justin. “The situation escalated, and the soldier discharged his weapon.”

Police responded swiftly to the scene and apprehended the suspect, and an investigation is going on, Maj. Gen. Justin, said.

“We were able to secure the scene and prevent further violence,” he added.

According to police, “the situation is currently calm.”
