14 abducted children return to Akobo

By Deng Ghai Deng

At least fourteen children who were abducted from Akobo County several years ago have finally returned home from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).

The joyous reunions, however, are accompanied by a sad challenge: some of the children struggle to remember their own identities or the names given to them by their biological parents.

Puok Nyang Tutjiek, the commissioner of Akobo County, confirmed to Number One Citizen Newspaper that three more children arrived in Akobo on July 9, 2024.

“These children remember only their first names, which has made identification a complex task,” Puok remarked.

“Despite these memory gaps, their return has ignited a renewed sense of hope among families who had long feared they might never embrace their missing loved ones again.”

The recent arrivals join an expanding cohort of children who have voluntarily made their way back from GPAA.

Earlier, on July 5, 2024, two girls and one boy returned, following a group of seven children who arrived prior.

Currently, these young souls are under the care and support of the Commissioner’s residence as they reintegrate into their communities.

Commissioner Puok emphasized that while the scars of abduction may linger, the unwavering love and determination of their families ensure a promising future for each child who has found their way back home.
