Rape suspect detained in Aweil

By Hou Akot Hou

A 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly luring a girl into a having sex as they were both heading to a nightclub in Malual-Kuel, Aweil East County, near the border area.

The police inspector for Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, Mr. Pinyding Kuol Makuach, said the man was arrested because his behaviour was “uncultured.”

Makuach stated that the suspect, whose name has been withheld, had recently returned from Sudan along with many others.

The inspector said the man is alleged to have then acted ruthlessly towards the young girl, who is now receiving treatment in the hospital.

“The young man is now behind bars in police custody in Wanyjok and will be presented to the prosecutor, who will then take the case to the county court to deliver the verdict,” said Makuach.

The police inspector condemned the “ruthless behaviour” of luring a teenage girl into the bushes and assaulting her, describing it as “damning and uncalled for in our culture.”

He added that the suspect has admitted his guilt, but the girl’s parents have filed a criminal case for rape, which is a punishable offence in the courts.

Makuach urged young men and women to focus on education and avoid resorting to sexual violence out of desperation.

Gender-based violence experts have also called on the community to refrain from such acts of sexual violence against girls and women.
