Northern Bahr el Ghazal forms disaster management committee

By Hou Akot Hou

The governor of Northern Bahr El Ghazal state has formed a disaster management committee to address the ongoing flood crisis and coordinate humanitarian efforts.

Zechariah Garang Lual, the state’s Minister of Information said the 11-member committee is composed of cabinet members and is headed by the governor himself, along with several ministers, including the Information Minister.

The primary objective of the committee is to map out flood-prone areas and develop mechanisms to assist the affected population.

“The recent heavy rains have submerged most of the low-lying areas in Aweil South East and Aweil North counties,” Lual explained. “The committee will identify these flood-prone zones and work with international partners to respond to the needs of the internally displaced persons.”

The committee plans to conduct weekly risk assessments and raise awareness among the public about flood risks, particularly in the low-lying areas.

Lual emphasized the importance of this proactive approach, as weather experts have warned that several states, including Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Unity, and Jonglei, are likely to be severely affected by the ongoing flooding.
