By Deng Ghai Deng

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has called for continued unity and peace in the country.

The President made the call on Tuesday, 30th July, in Martyrs’ Day message to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence.

Kiir reflected on the significance of the day, emphasizing the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the struggle for liberation.

“Today (July 30), we stand in silence and observance to remember those who gave their lives for our independence and the prosperity of our land,” Kiir said.

Kiir underscored that South Sudan’s hard-won independence was not an instant achievement but the result of immense sacrifice.

He highlighted the contributions of the nation’s veterans and martyrs, describing them as symbols of the country’s pride and hope.

The President also addressed the current state of the nation, stressing the need for long-lasting peace.

“Our desire for peace must not be misconstrued as weakness but as a necessary step for economic well-being and regional prosperity,” Kiir stated.

He called on peace-loving nations worldwide to join South Sudan in commemorating this significant day.

Furthermore, Kiir praised the resilience of South Sudan’s armed forces and the nation’s enduring spirit.

He encouraged citizens to cherish the values of July 30, which serve as a source of strength amid challenges.

In his address, Kiir extended congratulations to South Sudan’s national basketball team, the Bright Stars, for their achievements.

“Their success is a testament to our nation’s potential and spirit,” he said.

The President concluded his message by urging South Sudanese to prioritize the nation’s future over individual interests and to strive for peace and prosperity.

“Let us work hard for our future generations,” Kiir said, offering blessings for the Republic of South Sudan and wishing all a happy commemoration.
