Telecom companies increase tariffs

By Deng Ghai Deng

MTN, Zain, and Digitel South Sudan have announced a second phase of tariff adjustments, effective August 1, 2024, in alignment with the latest exchange rate regulations set by the Bank of South Sudan and the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The three telecommunications giants revealed that this adjustment will result in increased costs for mobile airtime and internet data bundles.

The decision aims to support continued investment in advanced technology, ensure network reliability, and enhance customer service.

In a joint statement, the companies emphasized their commitment to transparency and customer satisfaction.

“We recognize the importance of transparent communication and assure our customers that these adjustments are essential for maintaining and improving our services,” the statement said.

“We are dedicated to minimizing the impact on telecommunications costs and remain committed to providing affordable and reliable services.”

This phase follows a previously announced three-phase tariff increment plan that began on September 15, 2022, as mandated by the NCA.

The initial phase saw significant increases in mobile tariff rates, including a doubling of subscription costs for voice bundles and substantial hikes in daily internet bundle rates.

Under the new tariff structure, MTN South Sudan’s 100 MB data bundle has increased from 515 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) to 1,120 SSP.

Similarly, Zain South Sudan has implemented comparable changes. Previously, Zain and MTN customers needed to pay 100 USD for 12 GB of monthly data bundles, highlighting the broader trend of rising costs.

The telecommunication companies reassured customers that they are working to minimize the financial impact while striving to enhance service quality and technological capabilities.
