Leadership as God intended: Great leaders talk less, listen more (Proverbs 18:2) ‭‬‬

By Very Rev Nathaniel Garang Aduotdiit

“Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.”

Leaders partly are Leaders because God particularly calls them to provide direction and solutions to the world’s questions and problems; and so, the most effective way leaders can provide the needed solution to a people is the ability leaders possess to diagnose and understand the problem they are called to solve! James Jude’s brother says, “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;” (James 1:19) NKJV. As a leader I have come to understand that almost 80% of good counselling and problem-solving is merely possessing the ability to listen well, possessing the ability to hear well;  because Listening well, helps one to understand the challenge and hence, no need to say many things! Solomon again says, “He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.” (Proverbs 17:27)NKJV

Here are a few important insights leaders cultivate when they talk less and listen more!

Firstly, they grow in Empathy: Listening before talking allows you to understand others’ perspectives and feelings, fostering a sense of empathy in your communication.

Secondly, Respect: By patiently listening, you show respect for the speaker, acknowledging their thoughts and validating their voice.

Thirdly, the ability to Resolve conflicts: Effective listening is crucial for resolving conflicts, as it helps identify underlying issues and facilitates a more constructive dialogue.

Fourthly, there is the building of relationships: Cultivating the habit of listening demonstrates genuine interest, contributing to the development of stronger and more meaningful relationships.

Finally, Clarity: Taking the time to listen attentively can lead to clearer communication, reducing misunderstandings and promoting more effective leadership solutions to challenges and problems.

In conclusion, leaders must always keep in mind that taking time to gain an understanding of a problem, double solves the problem, rather than the frantic airing of one’s opinions without a clear understanding!

God bless you.
