UNDP, gov’t discuss development, governance

The newly appointed United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) representative in South Sudan, Dr. Mohamed Abchir discussed with First Vice President, Chairperson of the Governance Cluster, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, a key step towards establishing collaborative efforts on governance and development.

The meeting served to reaffirm UNDP’s commitment to promoting inclusive, effective, and accountable governance in the country.

Dr. Abchir highlighted governance as one of UNDP’s core solutions worldwide, expressing the organization’s intent to adopt a people-centered approach to support sustainable development.

“Effective governance is not just a hallmark of UNDP; it is essential for our three main areas of change: structural transformation, leaving no one behind, and building resilience. It is critical for managing the risks associated with these transformations and ensuring all citizens are empowered and included,” Dr. Abchir stated in a statement.

During their discussion, the two leaders explored various areas of ongoing collaboration between UNDP and the government.

Topics included support for the electoral process through the National Elections Commission (NEC), the Constitution Making Process, and assistance to the Judicial Reform Committee (JRC).

Dr. Abchir reiterated UNDP’s commitment to helping South Sudan achieve sustainable peace and development.

He also emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to address ongoing challenges.

The UNDP team is eager to work alongside the government and citizens to drive transformative changes both in the country and the wider region.
