Mysterious illness kills nine in Aweil East

By Hou Akot Hou

Nine people have died over the weekend from an unidentified ailment in Adut-Adhot village near Warawar Town in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.

Witness Dut Garang Deng explained that the family fell ill after eating a meal and suffered rapid health declines.

“What stunned the people of Adut-Adhot is the immediate death of eight individuals—all at once. We rushed to the scene, and soon after, they began vomiting and exhibited signs of fatigue before passing away. The head of the family and her oldest daughter died on the spot, followed by the others,” he said.

Deng reported that the mother was transported to Aweil for medical assistance but succumbed to the illness on Sunday as well.

This is not the first time such a tragic incident has occurred in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State

Residents are expressing concern, with some suspecting sorcery as a possible cause for the rapid onset of illness.

The community is reeling after similar deaths were reported in Aweil South and West counties last month.

In response to the alarming situation, health officials have been dispatched to investigate the cause of the illness, while local and state authorities are conducting further inquiries.
