An unidentified woman was found dead in a river, suspected to have drowned while trying to cross near Guom Juer East Payam in Wadwil village on Tuesday morning.
Sources suggest she may have perished while navigating the deep waters.
Philip Agany Thiep, Police Inspector for Aweil West County said he was informed of the incident from a distance.
“I learned about the situation in Gogrial East while at the Nyamlel county headquarters. According to sources, the woman appears to be in her early thirties,” he said.
Thiep described how the woman likely chose to cross the river at an unfrequented route, which ultimately led to her tragic fate.
After being found, her body was taken to a local hospital for a post-mortem examination, where no signs of injury were detected.
Local health worker Thiep Deng added, “the lack of injuries suggests she was not harmed by another person, and heavy flooding may have contributed to her drowning.”
He called on the relatives of the unidentified woman to come forward, noting that her body is currently at Nyamlel Hospital and will be released to her family upon their arrival.
Residents have also raised concerns about the dangers posed by recent flooding, which has submerged many low-lying areas.
This has led to incidents such as snake bites and drownings, particularly among those who do not know how to swim.
Authorities are warning the public to take these risks seriously.
Northern Bahr El Ghazal State has been identified by weather experts as flood-prone, prompting local authorities to implement disaster management measures and raise awareness about safety during this challenging period.
