Former Detainees support Tumaini Initiative

By Bosco Bush

A senior army general representing the Former Detainees (FDs) in South Sudan’s transitional government of national unity has expressed hope and support for the Tumaini Initiative for Peace in the country.

Speaking during the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) Technical Committee Meeting on Tuesday, Gen. Bior Leek said he believes the citizens also support the Nairobi-led Tumaini Initiative, which aims to engage with the holdout opposition groups that have not signed the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.

“We heard there’s a Tumaini Peace in Nairobi, but now we are stuck and we don’t know what is going on. But for me, I’m with Tumaini. I’m with it and the citizens of this country are with that Tumaini. Let them come in,” Gen. Leek stated.

The general said the timely incorporation of the holdout groups into the peace process would bring peace to South Sudan.

“If you don’t want Tumaini it’s up to you, and we will see who you are because we want peace in this country,” he added.

Furthermore, Gen. Leek urged for calm and the urgent intervention of the security mechanisms to cease the ongoing tensions in various parts of the country, including Nasir, Yambio, and Uror.

“I urge the JDB (Joint Defense Board), the CDF (Chief of Defense Forces) and the deputy CDF to take an urgent decision to stop all these tensions especially in Yambio, Nasir, Uror and all these areas. Because I will not accept any report telling us that the ceasefire is holding. It’s not holding,” the general stated.
