At least five children have reportedly died from hunger among the hundreds of returnees camped at Bar-nyiwec Boma in Nyalath Payam, Aweil Center County, Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.
Athuai Athuai Diing, the chief of the returnees, explained that they were relocated to Bar-nyiwec Boma by the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) and the state government.
“We were brought here by the RRC and the state government, but we have received no assistance. It is painful for us; five children have died due to a lack of food,” stated Athuai.
“Many others are starving because we have nothing to eat.”
Adut Garang, a returnee, echoed these concerns, stressing the dire situation.
“There are no essential commodities or shelter. The RRC has not provided any tangible services for us. We urge the government to relocate us and provide the necessary support, as we are far from Aweil Town,” she said.
The returnees have been working on the farms of the host community and are requesting government assistance to improve their circumstances.
