Wall collapses, killing woman in Aweil

By Hou Akot Hou

A 60-year-old woman lost her life after a wall collapsed on her over the weekend in Maper-Akot-Aru, Aweil Town. Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

The victim, identified as Akuc Dut Achuil, was visiting from Udhum village in Aweil West County to see her daughter’s family.

“She came to visit her daughter, who is married to a local man. While there, she decided to greet the neighbors and sat in a tukul when the wall fell on her,” eyewitness Adut Garang Bol explained.

“It was unexpected. She was simply here to see her family, and then this happened.”

After the incident, it was reported that Akuc suffered broken ribs and severe bleeding, leading to her immediate death.

The Health Education focal point at Aweil Hospital, Mr. Luka Lual Aleu Jok, confirmed the incident, stating that an elderly woman was brought to Aweil but they could not save her life as she died instantly.

Local residents attribute the incident to poorly constructed houses using weak structures and inadequate poles for support.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Earlier this year, minors and a woman died in a house fire in Aweil East as they were trying to keep warm.

Residents are urged to consider the quality of the structures they live in, despite the economic challenges they may face.
