A peace dialogue between Panyijar County in Unity State and Yirol East County in Lakes State concluded on Thursday, September 5th focusing on pressing issues such as cattle raiding, revenge attacks, and gender-based violence.
Organized by the Ministry of Peacebuilding in collaboration with PAX, a Dutch peacebuilding organization, and UNMISS, the three-day event brought together state ministers, local leaders, and community representatives from both states.
The dialogue resulted in the signing of 21 resolutions aimed at addressing conflicts and enhancing cooperation between the two regions.
Key agreements included the establishment of a border court to handle criminal activities and the apprehension of cattle thieves.
Peter Gatchak Both, community chief of Panyijar County, emphasized the importance of peace for community cohesion. “Such peace initiatives will foster unity among the people of South Sudan,” he stated, urging the government to improve connectivity in the region.
Chief Malek Aguet of Amongpiny Payam in Rumbek Centre highlighted the ongoing issue of cattle raiding among youth and the need for dialogue to prevent violence.
“We are here to discuss how to stop the violence that harms our communities,” he said.
Kuer Dhuor Machar, paramount chief of Yirol East County, reinforced the commitment to peace, noting the need for better road connectivity and communication between the two counties to facilitate cooperation.
He called on the government to construct roads and improve network access to combat crime.
Ira Emmanuel Dila Damugi, Country Director of PAX South Sudan, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the dialogue, which builds on previous peace resolutions from 2018 and 2022.
He emphasized the need for a robust traditional justice system to address criminal activities effectively.
Minister of Peacebuilding in Lakes State, Nyanhok Malou Marial, expressed optimism about the sustainability of the peace dialogue, highlighting the collaborative effort of both states.
She stressed that peace is a collective responsibility and called for the implementation of the signed resolutions.
Commissioner of Panyijar County, Hon. Gabriel Majok Bol, concluded by affirming the commitment of both communities to end violence and prioritize peace.
“We will ensure that these resolutions are followed through,” he said.
The successful dialogue marks a significant step toward fostering lasting peace and cooperation between Panyijar and Lakes State, setting a precedent for future inter-state engagements.
