Lakes State detains vehicles over fatal accident

Authorities in Lakes State have detained four vehicles in connection with the death of a 17-year-old boy, who was killed in a car accident in Yirol West County.

Lakes State police spokesman Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuacsaid the incident occurred on September 8, 2024, around 8:00 PM. An unidentified vehicle struck three people on a motorbike in Pabur village, located in the Geng-geng Payam of Yirol West County.

One of the injured, Mabor Akol Awer, 17, succumbed to his injuries at Yirol Hospital shortly after being evacuated for treatment.

The other two victims, both 15 years old, include Awer’s uncle’s daughter and a relative named Nyanawec.

Mabor noted that the vehicle responsible for the accident fled the scene, and the police are conducting a thorough investigation to identify it.

“Currently, we have detained four vehicles at the Yirol West County police station as part of our efforts to determine the vehicle involved in this tragic incident,” Mabor stated.

“If we are able to identify the vehicle, it will be beneficial.”

The police reported that this was one of the few incidents over the weekend, and overall security in the state remains calm.

Additional Incident in Rumbek

In a separate incident, 14 passengers traveling from Juba to Wau survived a car accident in Rumbek Central County.

Maj. Mabor reported that on September 6, around 2:00 PM, a commercial vehicle (No. SSD 885 E) overturned in Rak-majok village under Matangai Payam, injuring all passengers on board.

When police intervened, they evacuated the injured to the hospital. Unfortunately, one passenger later succumbed to injuries sustained during the accident, while the remaining victims are receiving treatment at Rumbek State Hospital.

Dr. Terran Madit confirmed that the hospital received several casualties from the accident.

He noted, “Out of the 14 injured, three had severe injuries, primarily leg injuries, while the others had minor injuries.”

The medical team is closely monitored the conditions of the remaining patients, and arrangements were made for further treatment.

Most of the injured were transferred to Wau with government assistance, leaving only one patient with a head injury and a fractured arm at Rumbek State Hospital.
