Last extension-MPs

By William Madouk

Section of national lawmakers have urged the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity, (RTGoNU) to utilize the recent two years extension adequately, as the last.

The lawmakers voiced their concerns over what they perceived as lack of political will, in implementing the 2018 peace deal that would end through democratic polls.

Hon. Farouk Gatkouth, the SPLM-IO chief whip is among legislators, disgruntled over extension of the transition government’s tenure.

“Our people are there, mockeries, they are angry, whatever you term, because of these extensions, every now and then, but we must apologies to them. And make them feel that if this is the only way to keep this country going, why not?” he said.

“I hope, as long as we have diagnosed the disease ‘lack of political will’, I hope this time there will be a strong political will to hospitalize, break and make medicine for the sick[ness],” he added.

The Opposition Chief whip made this remark on Friday during an extraordinary sitting that endorsed the extension of transition period.

Another MP, Samuel Loti cited as they nodded at extension of the transition government’s lifespan but warned that let that mark the end of extensions.

“As we amend this very important provision in the constitution to extend the life of this government. Let us take a note of the fact that this endless extension should come to stop,” he noted.

“This would be the last chance honorable members! So, that we should not continue extending again, we should finish this and end it with an election,” Loti continued.

Dengtiel Ayuel Kur, the chairperson of specialized committee on legislation and justice noted that: “if this bill has been debated, I am very sure that not only saying that there is no political will would have been heard.”

“People are crying out there why are you maintaining your service government and its parliament,” Dengtiel stressed.

In a twist, speaker Jemma Nunu said the floor was opened for debate on the budget and nobody was stopped from speaking.

She also noted that if there was lack of political will, then it is from all the parties, citing that government of national unity carries the blame without excluding any political party.

Nunu urged the parties to utilize the extension period well, by coming up with well defined roadmap supported by budget to complete pending prevision on time.
