Commissioner Juach Arok of Twic East County in Jonglei State has launched the construction and renovation of dykes around the county to protect residents from flooding.
In a statement obtained by this outlet, the commissioner expressed that the initiative is aimed at safeguarding the people from the ongoing flooding in the area.
It was revealed that the ongoing construction and renovation of a dyke around Panyagor and the county headquarters will cover an area of 200 kilometers.
He underscored the importance of the dyke in ensuring the safety of the residents at this time when the state is expected to face flooding.
“The dyke will serve as a protective barrier, preventing the destruction of property and loss of lives during heavy rains and floods. Our top priority is the welfare and safety of our citizens, and this project is a testament to that,” Juach said.
He urged the residents to team up and support the government in the dyke construction project.
The Commissioner stressed the need for a functional water pump to help pump water out of the dyke during heavy rainfall.
He called on the community to assist in all areas to combat floods and appealed to the state and national governments for support in completing the dikes on time.
“It is a collective effort that will benefit the entire community and create a safer environment for generations to come.”
On 20 August, the South Sudan Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation issued an urgent appeal for communities in low-lying areas along the Nile to relocate, as water levels at the Mangala Telemetric Station in Juba County reached a five-year high of 14.85 meters.
Maximum water levels have also been reported at stations in Juba, Bor, and eight other locations, further worsening the humanitarian crisis.
