The United States of America has announced additional funding of $32 million specifically for refugee response efforts in South Sudan.
US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced on September 25 as part of an increase in humanitarian assistance funding aimed at addressing the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
This latest funding boost raises the total U.S. assistance dedicated to supporting people fleeing the conflict in Sudan to over $105 million for fiscal year 2024.
In addition to this targeted support, the overall humanitarian assistance provided by the United States to South Sudan-benefiting both Sudanese refugees and South Sudanese citizens in need, has exceeded $640 million during the same period.
This funding is essential for addressing the urgent needs of those affected by the prolonged instability and violence in the region.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the importance of a coordinated international response and reiterated the urgent need for increased contributions from South Sudan’s transitional government.
She urged the government to allocate more financial resources toward humanitarian efforts and essential public services.
She further called for actions to reduce the costs and risks faced by organizations working to assist the South Sudanese population.
