South Sudan government has launched an action plan aimed at facilitating the urgent return of refugees from neighbouring countries.
The initiative launched on Thursday in Juba, seeks to create a safe and dignified environment for millions of South Sudanese internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees.
Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster, emphasized the importance of the plan during the event.
“Our goal is to ensure that every South Sudanese has the opportunity to return home in safety and with dignity,” she stated. “This action plan is a crucial step towards restoring hope and stability for those who have endured years of hardship.”
Albino Akol, South Sudan’s Humanitarian Affairs Minister, outlined the primary areas of intervention that will support this initiative.
“Providing security and basic services is essential for the successful return of refugees and IDPs to their areas of origin,” he said. “We are committed to implementing these measures as part of our obligations under the 2018 peace deal, which mandates the return of displaced individuals to their homes.”
As of 2024, 9 million people including IDPs, Refugees and host communities are in need of humanitarian aid, according to Akol.
“In practical terms, the plans translate to shifting away from humanitarian aid dependency to infrastructural development and investment in refugees, returnees, IDPs and host communities in the areas of livelihood, sustainable energy, education, and health towards achieving self-sufficiency and resilience,” Akol said.
The return of refugees is not only a humanitarian priority but also a critical component of the ongoing peace process.
As the government works to rebuild trust and stability in the region, officials are hopeful that this action plan will pave the way for lasting peace and prosperity in South Sudan.
With millions still displaced due to years of conflict, the government’s commitment to facilitating their return marks a critical moment in the nation’s recovery efforts.
