A 16-year-old girl, identified as Anok Makuer, tragically committed suicide in Makuac village, Malekagok Payam, Rumbek East County, Lakes State, on Sunday.

According to Lakes State police spokesperson Major Elijah Mabor Makuac, the girl was discovered hanging from a tree in her family’s garden.

The police were immediately notified and launched an investigation into the incident.

While the exact circumstances surrounding the suicide remain unclear, the spokesperson expressed deep concern about the rising prevalence of such tragic events in the state.

He called upon humanitarian partners to intervene and conduct awareness campaigns to address the underlying issues that may lead individuals to take their own lives.

Major Mabor emphasized that individuals experiencing emotional distress should seek help from friends, family, or professionals rather than resorting to drastic measures.

He stressed the importance of open communication and sharing one’s problems to prevent such tragedies.

The local executive chief, Chol Marier, confirmed that there were no known family issues or conflicts that could have contributed to the girl’s decision.

He revealed that the deceased had never attended school and was involved in agricultural activities at the time of her death.
