Over 40 people receive trauma healing training in Yei

By James Innocent

To support mental health in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, Fin Church Aid has launched a five-day trauma healing training targeting about 50 participants from various community sectors.

The training commenced on Friday afternoon, bringing together individuals from different backgrounds to address the issue of trauma in the county.

Since the beginning of 2024, many residents of Yei have been facing psychological challenges due to ongoing economic difficulties.

The rising costs of food and essential goods have left many families struggling to provide for their basic needs. As a result, many children are unable to attend school, as parents cannot afford the necessary fees.

This economic strain has not only weakened living standards but has also exacerbated feelings of vulnerability and hopelessness among the population.

The return of citizens from refugee settlements in Uganda and Congo adds another layer of difficulty to the situation. Many of the returnees are reintegrating into communities already burdened by trauma and economic instability.

The trauma healing training is designed to foster understanding and recovery among participants.

Fin Church Aid (FCA) Project manager, Slash Moses explained that the program is focused on equipping participants with the tools to help themselves and their communities.

He said participants include people from diverse groups such as women, youth, community leaders, and individuals with special needs, all of whom are essential to the healing process.

The training emphasizes various coping mechanisms and strategies to manage trauma effectively.

“The training is good to help them recover from traumatic experiences looking into the current conflict situations and the economic hardship people are facing and this training will help them to become reliant when it comes to issues dealing with trauma,” he mentioned.

Among the participants is Asiki Moses, who is a member of the Disability Action Group (DAG) based in Yei.

Asiki expressed his appreciation for the training, recognizing its potential to make a significant impact on the community.

“We are receiving a five days training conducted by Fin Church Aid on trauma healing so that the participants can take the message to the community concerning trauma healing, because majority of citizens in the community are facing alot of economic challenges forcing others to commit suicide and with this, I really applauds the organization for coming up with the initiative,” he stated.

He also urges all the participants to take the knowledge into practice so that some of the people get the knowledge in order to encourage trauma healing.

He encourage participants to translate the knowledge gained during the training into actionable practices within the community.

The trauma healing training is not only about individual recovery but also aims to create a wave effect throughout the community.
